Father and Son and Sister Unite!

Last weekend brought Marcius' Dad and sister Cassandra to DC. Lots of laughter, good food, drumming and tourist-ing - were had!
Here is a pic from Frederick Douglass House and National Park in Southeast DC. FD was a biracial child born into slavery who escaped, learned to read and worked with Lincoln and others to abolish slavery. Over time he grew to be the most wealthy and influential African American in the 1800s working for the US Government. We visited his restored home.

Marcius also had a busy week heading up to Ottawa as a keynote speaker at a optics conference. I have been busy finishing up writing (well, mostly editing) on-line curriculum for a course that I used to teach face-to-face at OISE. Hopefully I don't have too many revisions!

We have another friend, Lucian, passing through this week and then we are off to New Orleans for our 5th wedding anniversary. Can you believe it has been that long?

Happy long weekend to all of you in Canada! (We don't get ours until next week!)

April Showers... Bring Visitors!!!

Marcius and I have finished off April with a bang! We had friends and family with us every weekend!
The order:
1. My brother Sean.
2. Our friend Kellie.
3. The Delamere Clan (which included a trip from the Easter Bunny)
4. Our friend Elizabeth who made it all the way down from Edmonton.

Thanks to all of you for giving us a great excuse to hit the Smithsonian, eat out nice meals, head to the baseball game and shopping! Sean and Kellie got the worst of the April showers, the Delamere's got soaked and then sunburned and Elizabeth had practically perfect weather (hence the trip to the baseball game... and some frisbee in the park... and a hike in Virginia... and no need to go shopping to avoid the rain..smile...)

In other news... Marcius went to Marine day last week where he and 400 other Congressional Staffers whet to Quantico Naval Base for the day where they rode in tanks, helicopters, fired all possible firearms, watched live fire exercises, and checked out all the high tech plane in an air show - he came home ready to enlist and with shell casings to put on display (seriously? - this would destroy our peace keeping, gun control image). Not to worry about Marcius deploying - you have to be a citizen to serve - phew!

Happy Election Day Canada! (Yes - we did vote! - did you?)

Spring Update

Long time - no post! (Although I think I've said that before!)

Since Feb. 14th, (I am embarrassed by how much time has passed) we have been busy with many highs and lows.
Here goes...

My close friend Zeba came down for a week in February. So great to show off this amazing city. Highlights included successful shopping, excellent eating (especially Five Guys Hamburgers) and a trip to the National Zoo to visit the 7 new lion cubs (and all the museums we went to: American Indian, Air and Space, Natural History and the monuments....). While Zeba was here we also celebrated Marcius' 32nd birthday with an Ethiopian Feast. DC is actually home to most Ethiopians outside of Ethiopia, needless to say the food was excellent.

M's BDay with our great friends Priya and Will
I officially reapplied for another leave-of-absence from TDSB and have had many good phone interviews since. In fact, I was invited to full day interviews at a private girls' school in Maryland (Holton-Arms), as well as to Sidwell Friends School in DC, which is where the Obama girls go. (No sightings of the President's daughters, but still cool to be there. I also kept wondering who was on the school staff and who was secret service.) That same week I was also offered a contract to write some curriculum for OISE and so I am busy doing that. As exciting as the opportunities were, I haven't received any offers. I am still applying and waiting for that special school that doesn't get bogged down by visa sponsorship or an October 1st start date. (The visa I need is an H-1B and employment may only start on Oct 1.)

Next up, my Mom returned to DC and we quickly started our 1100 mile road trip to Sanibel Island to celebrate March Break with the Delameres. We couldn't have asked for better weather and I had the best time hanging out with my nieces full-time.

Not long after my Mom and I returned, Marcius took off to the Oil Sands in Ft. McMurray. I will let him fill you in on all the details. Although I can tell you a highlight was sitting in a box seat during an Alberta Junior Hockey League playoff game.

Having barely seen each other in March, Marcius and I made a quick trip to NYC to take in a show at the Village Vanguard. As always, I fell in love with the city's vibrancy and never ending great places to eat! (This time we were very trendy and had brunch at Freeman's, located down a back alley in the East Village.)

Next, I secretly came to Toronto for a meeting at OISE. Not to mention the Megabus fare was only $1 each way.... yup $1. (+ a fifty cent booking fee but I didn't let that stop me) On the Wednesday afternoon I decided to treat myself to Billy Elliot, the musical. I learned that before every show there is a lottery for box seats for $25 - an of course I won! I assumed that there was no way that I was going to win because I had already won Roll-Up-The-Rim-To-Win earlier that morning. The show was great!

The Cherry Blossoms arrived in DC and Marcius and I indulged!

Most recently, my brother Sean came to DC. We had good walks, talks, shops, tours, games of Catan and lots of laughs, despite the brutal weather. My friend Kellie arrives tonight and then my sister's family is here next weekend for Easter.

We are both finding the uncertainty of next year difficult, but we are just trying to enjoy Spring in DC, NBA and NHL playoffs, and all of our visitors. So come!

Job Update

Just to publicly let everyone know...smile... we are still no closer to figuring out next year. While there have been some interesting nibbles on my teaching front and Marcius is exploring lots of potential opportunities, no decisions have been made yet. We will certainly let everyone know as soon as we know. Who knows what the future will bring? For those of you that know me well, yes I am struggling with the uncertainty, and I have been going to yoga and trying to meditate, but the excitement of a new adventure, as well as just enjoying our time here is tipping the scale in a positive direction....for now...

Has it really been that long?

Well... Happy Valentine's Day!
Winter was short lived!
Apologies for not updating AT ALL! Perhaps it was the January Blahs?
The good, well, really great news is that Spring has arrived in DC!!! If you ask a local they will claim it is still winter, but to any Northerner it is Spring. I have seen crocus and daffodil shoots, I am wearing a spring jacket, that doesn't quite hide winter's glutany, and the heat is off in our apartment.... at least during the day. Have I tempted anyone to come and visit?

Some highlights of the past month include:
1. Skating at the sculpture garden with fellow Cannuks. we have joined a Meet-Up group with ex-pats and are now receiving invitiations to do Canadian things. You should have seen the looks we got on the metro carrying our skates!

2. Attending an Alvin Ailey Dance Performance. If you have never seen this group perform, you are missing out. I am not sure how often they come to Toronto, but this was the most moving performance I have ever seen. Beautiful and powerful. This is a youtube video of my favourite performance. (Although it doesn't do the live performance justice.)

3. Some daytime musem exploring on my own.

The Museum of American History - I took in Julia Child's kitchen, Woman's Liberation through the invention of Birth Control. I got tired and only walked through the basement.

The Rewick Gallery -  I took in two moving exhibits, A Revolution in Wood: The Bresler Collection and The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts from Japanese Internment Camps 1942-1946.

4. FINALLY, going to the Canadian Embassy! We went to a UofT Alumni Association event to hear Dr. Ron Deibert, who is the Director of The Canada Centre for Global Security Studies and the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs. His talk was on Cyber Security and was informative and frightening to say the least. Marcius and I both left feeling proud of Canada and the meaningful work that so many Canadians are involved in. Marcius always says that "Canadians really pack a punch per capita".

Yes, those are CND Flags in line with the Capitol.

5. We then caught a glimpse of the embassy while exploring The Newseum on Saturday. This innovative and visual museum is new to DC. It is not part of the Smithsonian, so there is a cost, but it is worth it. Some highlights included, Pulitzer Photographs Gallery, 9/11 Gallery, Berlin Wall Gallery, and Covering Katrina Exhibit.

We are doing well and can't wait to REALLY enjoy Spring!

MLK Day

Yesterday was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day - it is a national holiday celebrated all over but especially here in DC. To honour Dr. King, Marcius and fellow friends headed to the National Cathedral for an afternoon program of song, dance, and interfaith discussion.

Some moving moments included:

  • Singing of We Shall Overcome by everyone in attendance
  • Leaders from Jewish, Muslim and Christian faiths sharing a reading
  • Children's performances
  • A jazz harmonica performance  - yes I said Jazz Harmonica - it sort of actually works!
The new MLK Memorial is almost complete but won't officially be open in DC until the end of August. In a time of so much turmoil and hurt, MLK's birthday couldn't have come at a better time.

Oh....Canada...

In honour of the World Junior Hockey game on Wednesday I attempted a Canadian Classic for dinner - Tortierre - a hearty meaty dish that I thought would help the boys bring home the gold, but alas, no luck.
We had a great trip back in TO for the holidays with many wonderful, despite rushed, visits with friends and family. We have never eaten so much food!!

A few thoughts about TO:
1. Rob Ford? Seriously?!!!! I may never get over that one!
2. I forgot about the HST - that sucks...
3. TO has the best Asian food - wonderful to visit some old haunts like Asian Legend and Pho Eighty-Eight.
4. TO has Gerrard St - all Indian food in DC is high end and eaten with a knife and fork - seriously?
5. I still miss Tim Horton's (nothing like Dunkin Donuts), Joe Fresh Clothes, and Streetcars
6. I miss you all, but DC is slowly becoming home.

Happy New Year or as they say in my neighbourhood - Feliz Año Nuevo!
